(Bloomberg) -- U.S. stocks gained as speculation
Verizon Communications Inc. may be bought and a better-than-
expected manufacturing report carried benchmark indexes to

denied the report. Industrial shares, paced by United
Technologies Corp., climbed to an all-time high after the
Federal Reserve Bank of New York's general economic index rose
to its highest since June 2006.
