Zambia says plans to cancel unused mining licences

(Reuters) - Copper-rich Zambia plans to cancel mining licences that have not been used since they were obtained -- years ago in some cases -- and reassign them to new investors, the country's mining minister said on Monday.

Mines and Minerals Development Minister Kalombo Mwansa said the government had begun an investigation to find out how many licences might be covered and to determine whether companies were operating beyond areas allocated to them in the licences.
